Lifestyle in Madisonville, OH
Madisonville was established in 1809 as Madison, Ohio and was named after the newly elected President James Madison. The first permanent settler was Joseph Ward, a 65 year old Revolutionary War veteran from New Jersey. He and his sons built the first house, a log cabin, in 1797 along an old Indian trail near what is now Whetsel and Monning Avenue. By 1926 a post office was established in the village, and the name was changed to Madisonville to avoid duplication with another Madison, Ohio. By 1900, the population was 3,000 and in 1911, Madisonville was annexed by the City of Cincinnati. It currently has almost 10,000 residents.
Madisonville is in the midst of a community resurgence from newly renovated homes to new businesses and commercial developments. Many homes in Madisonville are affordably priced. Home styles range in variety from cape cods to cottage style to brick-style homes. Although most homes are older, there have been many in-fill new homes constructed as well as renovations of existing homes.
Plans are taking place to establish a mixed-use neighborhood business district at Madison Road and Whetsel Avenue. Madisonville’s historic bank building has been restored and now has apartment spaces and a brewery on the lower level. A mixed-use building is completed on the southern side of Madison and Whetsel. This 24,000 square foot building features apartments and commercial space. The Madisonville Retail Center has also received an upgrade facade. Two more buildings are planned – both are under construction. Additional there are new apartments available at the corner of Madison and Stewart.
Along Red Bank Road, even more development can been seen at the Medpace campus, The Summit (Dolce) Hotel and Red luxury apartments.
Madisonville is located conveniently off I-71. Downtown Cincinnati is approximately 10 minutes away, and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is a 35-minute drive. State Route 50 is short drive from Madisonville, connecting one to the southern edge of downtown Cincinnati in about 15 minutes. Queen City Metro Bus service runs several routes through Madisonville daily.
Many medical offices are located along Red Bank Road. Medpace, a research-based drug and medical device company is located at the corner of Madison and Red Bank Roads. Madisonville is a 10-minute drive to Jewish Hospital Kenwood Mercy Health which is conveniently located on Kenwood Road in Sycamore Township. This hospital features a state-of-the-art patient tower as well as a 24-hour emergency department. It is the region’s only adult Blood & Marrow Transplant Center. Bethesda North Hospital, a Level III Trauma Center, is located in the adjoining Montgomery area and is a 20-minute drive away.
Other Cincinnati area hospitals, such as The Christ Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, University Hospital and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center are located within a 20-minute drive. The Braxton Cann Health Center provides local health and dental care services.
A neighborhood Walmart is located on Red Bank Road along with other retail stores and restaurants. Nearby Mariemont offers specialty boutiques. Kenwood Towne Centre and Sycamore Plaza are both about 10 minutes away in Kenwood and provide access to over 100 national restaurants and retailers including Nordstrom’s and Macy’s. Downtown Madisonville has several local shops and restaurants, including Mad Llama Coffee Shop, The Cheesecakery bake shop, Bad Tom Smith Brewery and the French Rendez-Vous. The Summit, a Dolce Hotel, is located on the Medpace campus (formerly the Nutone chime factory) and offers 239 guest rooms. The popular Mazunte Taqueria restaurant is located west of Red Bank Road along Madison Road and has a second location on Madison Road east of Whetsel Avenue. The Madison Place is a coffee shop and community meeting space located along Plainville Road.
A fitness center, gym, swimming pool, and ball fields are available for community use at the Madisonville Recreation Center on Stewart Avenue. The Madisonville branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and the Madisonville Senior Center are hubs in the community. Bramble Park has a basketball court, picnic areas and baseball/softball fields. Several festivals along Madison Road are hosted in the heart of downtown Madisonville throughout the year.
The Little Duck Creek Trail and Nature Preserve in Madisonville spans for one mile from Plainville Road to Bramble Avenue. This trail is currently being further developed and expanded. The Madisonville Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (MCURC), Cincinnati Park Board, as well as community volunteers including Eagle Boy Scouts, local water conservationists and landscape companies are working together to improve the trail along its 35+ available acres. Plans are in place to extend the trail to the Murray Bike Trail.
Artsville is located on Whetsel Avenue and is a non-profit that promotes community art programs.
