It's quite a change since the first pioneers came to this area in the 1790s, but a link remains between the first settlers and today's suburban dweller – an appreciation for open spaces, privacy and a less hectic life. Symmes Township bears the name of John Cleves Symmes whose purchase of the lands between the two Miami rivers (the Miami Purchase) in 1788 led to the founding of Cincinnati. The township itself was founded in 1824. Early residents were German and Scotch-Irish. Interstates I-71 and I-275 have opened up Symmes to increasing development. Homes are beautiful examples of today's architectural brilliance, gathered together in warm, friendly communities. And while industry and commercialism have ensured Symmes Township's growing prosperity and contemporary services, a sense of history still lives in some older buildings, villages and even in life-long residents.
