One of the more spectacular artworks in the Adams County Barn Quilt Project is painted on a barn at the Goodseed Farm and Greenhouses in Peebles. This site features two multi-colored Le Moyne quilt blocks, one of more than 20 colorful traditional quilt squares painted on barns throughout the county.


The village of Peebles lies in the northeastern part of the county. At 1.2 square miles with a population of just 1,800, Peebles is relatively small giving residents a change to know just about everyone in town. Named after area businessman John Peebles, the town embraces the nearby Amish community known for their furniture and bakery businesses. Although a small village, Peebles hosts a world-renowned site for jet engine testing at the six thousand acre General Electric Peebles Test Operation site. Peebles is perhaps best known for its proximity to Serpent Mound-the largest and finest serpent effigy in the United States. A museum and park at the site attracts historians and tourists from around the world.


Located 76 miles outside Cincinnati in northeastern Adams County, Peebles sits at the intersection of St. Rt. 32 (James A. Rhodes Appalachian Highway) and St. Rt. 41. Alexander Salamon Airport in nearby West Union is the closest regional airport. Dayton International Airport is 70 minutes away. The Greater Cincinnati International Airport is a 90-100 minutes drive to Northern Kentucky.


The Peebles Life Squad provides emergency services for residents. Nearby Adams County Regional Medical Center is transitioning from a small county-owned hospital in nearby West Union, to a closer, and larger location near Seaman along Ohio 32. Plans call for the hospital to double in size adding a bigger emergency department, upgraded cancer services, and more operating rooms. The new location is expected to open in November 2006. Hospitals facilities in Cincinnati are 60-70 minutes away.


Daily needs like groceries and gas can be found here, but a more involved shopping trip will need a hop in the car to nearby West Union. Large shopping centers are in Dayton, or Cincinnati. If you are a collector of fossils and minerals, one of the best trilobite collectors in the U.S. lives in Peebles, and both sells and displays his unique collection. Ask anyone in town for directions to the House of Phacops!


Life moves at a slower pace in Peebles providing plenty of time for recreation. Outdoor pursuits abound in this lushly wooded region, like hunting and fishing at the nearby Brush Creek State Forest and Tranquility Wildlife Area. As part of the 200 mile Southern Ohio loop of the Birding National Heritage Trail, Peebles is becoming known as a good spring site for migrating warblers and summer specialties. Bring your binoculars! For recreation of a different type, Southern State Community College’s south campus is within minutes, and houses the only site in Ohio for the Appalachian Gateway Center focusing on regional heritage, culture and history.
