Carrollton, Kentucky is located about 60 miles south of Cincinnati and 60 miles north of Louisville. It sits at the confluence of the Kentucky River and Ohio River. The city’s population has held steady since the 1970s at just under 4,000 residents.

Boating and river sports are a big draw for the area. Carrollton is also home to General Butler State Resort Park, which offers a wide array of recreational activities including biking, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, golf, tennis and more.

Downtown Carrollton has a wide variety of antique stores and small boutiques. The Butler Outlet Mall is located on Highway 227, which connects US 42 and I-71. Several other retailers and restaurants sit along Highway 227.

Carrollton was founded under the name Port William in 1792. It wasn’t until 1838, when Gallatin County split into two counties that Port William was renamed Carrollton as the county seat of the new Carroll County.

Sparta’s original name was Brock’s Station, named for a landing on Eagle Creek. But the town’s name evolved after grist mills using the power of Eagle Creek began to populate the area; the largest mill was named Sparta and residents quickly adopted it as their new name.

Most residents enjoy the great outdoors either boating on the Ohio River or enjoying a day at nearby General Butler State Park. Motor sports enthusiasts of course attend events at the nearby Kentucky Speedway. The Belterra Golf Course and Casino are just across the Ohio River in Switzerland County.

The Sparta Store and Deli provides for the town’s daily needs, but bigger trips will need a jump in the car to either Cincinnati or Louisville.

Located 41 miles from Cincinnati in the golden triangle of communities connecting Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington, Sparta straddles two county lines, Gallatin and Owen Counties. Small but mighty, the village’s population of 230 grows large whenever there are events at the nearby Kentucky Speedway. Primarily a farming community, the lure of picturesque country roads and wide open spaces mixed with plenty of friendly faces explain why residents love to come home to Gallatin County.

I71 is the main transportation hub of this county, with Ky. Rt. 35 (Sparta Pike) and Rt. 467 the primary access through the village.

Carroll County Hospital is 20 miles south in nearby Carrollton and St Elizabeth Medical Center’s Grant County Hospital is 16 miles northeast in Williamstown. The Warsaw-Gallatin County Fire and Rescue provides EMS service to the county.

The river is a big focus of activities in Warsaw; most residents enjoy the great outdoors either boating on the Ohio River or enjoying a day at nearby General Butler State Park. Motor sports enthusiasts of course attend events at the nearby Kentucky Speedway as well as the Bluegrass Motorsports Club. The Belterra Golf Course and Casino are just across the Ohio River in Switzerland County. Sugar Bay and Walnut Ridge Country Clubs provide opportunities for the golf enthusiast. Each summer the town celebrates the River Days Festival celebrating its Ohio River heritage as a popular shipping port.

Three gift shops and two busy grocery stores supply the majority of shopping needs for the county’s residents. A more in-depth shopping trip requires a car ride to Cincinnati or Louisville.

I71 gets you to Gallatin County, but St. Rt. 35 is the primary access into Warsaw. U.S. 42 (Louisville Covington Highway, or Main Street) parallels the Ohio River through the historic downtown.

General Butler State Resort Park in Carrollton offers a wide array of recreational activities including biking, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, golf, tennis and more. Kentucky Speedway is 12 miles away in Sparta, Kentucky. The Kentucky Speedway hosts several racing events throughout the summer including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quaker State 400.

Ghent was settled in the 1790s, but was originally named McCool’s Creek Settlement. It wasn’t until 1814 that the town was laid out and Henry Clay suggested the name of Ghent. The city of Ghent, Netherlands (now in Belgium) was where the treaty ending the War of 1812 was signed.
