Silverton is a proud, enterprising village with a heritage that dates back to days shortly after the Revolutionary War. The atmosphere is still antique, but the spirit is progressive in every way. The area was settled in 1809 as a farming community with a railroad stop. Some notable Silverton residents include: Heisman Trophy winner, Roger Staubach; Fortune 500 CEO Carl Lindner; MLB Hall of Fame member and Cincinnati Reds Shortstop, Barry Larkin; and Olympian George Quigley. Silverton now has 4,800 residents. The village is enjoying a $50 million redevelopment project along Montgomery Road which is bringing luxury apartments, office space as well as street-level retail and restaurant spaces.

There are two parks in Silverton. Silverton Park (Montgomery Road and Highland Avenue) is located on the site of the original Silverton Train Station and one can see a replica of that station that now serves a museum with photos from the village’s past as well as the Olympic uniform worn by Silverton native and former Reds’ player Barry Larkin. This park also features a Veterans Plaza to honor those who have served. The Ralph W. Ficke Memorial Park (Montgomery and Stewart Roads) has 12 acres and includes a soccer field, baseball diamonds, batting cage, tennis court, two half-court basketball courts as well as a picnic shelter. Enjoy walking along the trail at this park. Silverton residents enjoy an annual Memorial Day Parade, Taste of Silverton, Family Fun Walk and tree-lighting ceremony in December, among other community events. Meier’s Winery has been in business for more than 100 years and once grew grapes on land that is now the Kenwood Towne Centre. The winery first made fresh grape juice and then wine. During prohibition, it reverted to creating sparkling grape juice. Following the repeal of prohibition in 1933, the company returned to wine making. The company now makes 45 kinds of wines as well as premium grape juices.  The Silverton Cafe has been a local spot since the early 1970s and is located on Montgomery Road.

There is an abundance of convenience shopping along Montgomery and Plainfield Roads. Kenwood Towne Centre and Sycamore Plaza are a five-minute drive east of Silverton offering hundreds of national brand stores.

Along its two main streets, the business section is a bustling affair. Here new-looking stores, professional buildings and the famous Meier’s Wine Cellar can be found. The residential district has some secluded neighborhoods that can match those of most prestigious suburbs in the area. Homes are attractive, with their modest dignity, their beautiful shade trees, and neatly-kept grounds. These houses come in an assortment of comfortable ranch designs, as well as smaller frame and brick capes. Those seeking a community of friendly neighbors and family-owned stores will find Silverton has a special quality that no planner could ever blueprint.

I-71 passes through Silverton at its southern boundary, bringing downtown Cincinnati within 15 minutes’ driving time and providing quick access toward Columbus. I-75, I-275 and the Ronald Reagan Highway are about 15 minutes away. Queen City Metro bus service is readily available since Silverton is on several bus routes serving Cincinnati and suburban areas beyond Silverton.

Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Good Samaritan and The Christ Hospital are all located within a 10-12 minute drive.

Pleasant Ridge Community Center has a fitness room, gym, swimming, tennis, nature study and other recreational programs supervised by the Cincinnati Recreation Department. Nearby Losantiville Country Club is private and features an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts and a club house with dining options. Avon Fields, 10-minutes away, is a public, 18-hole course. Kenwood Country Club, which is private, has two 18-hole golf courses and is about 10-minutes away. 

Pleasant Ridge Park is a kid’s dream! Play on the “castle”, with all of its cubby holes and climbing structures. This park has baseball and soccer fields and tennis courts. The outdoor deep-water pool and wading pool keep residents cool and refreshed during summer. Nearby in Amberley Village is French Park with many picnic areas as well as trails to enjoy and explore.

Along Montgomery Road are many shops and cafes to enjoy. The Loving Hut features Asian-style, vegan meals. Nine Giant Brewing is a local brewery and pub.The Coffee Exchange takes care of your caffeine needs and is a wonderful place to relax and read from their many books housed there. Everybody’s Records is the place for LP or DVD searches and has been serving music lovers for decades. These are just a few of many local stores and restaurants to patronize. We could go on and on: Pleasant Ridge Chili, Queen City Comics... 

Pleasant Ridge is within 10 minutes of Kenwood Towne Centre with three large department stores and about 100 smaller shops and restaurants. Sycamore Square in Kenwood has even more national branded stores.

Today’s Pleasant Ridge, however, is a community of block parties, neighborhood clubs, and citizens involved in various activities. Home buyers can find an assortment of Tudors to choose from. Many of the wide, winding streets have spacious old frame houses almost hidden by the ancient trees that surround them. Other areas offer comfortable homes of unpretentious beauty; still others have newer brick houses. Pleasant Ridge is rich in heritage and moderately-priced homes that attract first-time buyers. The charm of Pleasant Ridge is always present  with its gas-lit streets.

Oakley was originally known as “Four Mile” and was a wagon stop in the 1850s on the Madison Turnpike now called Madison Road. The village of Oakley (named for the many oak trees in the area) was established in 1898 and then incorporated as part of Cincinnati in 1913.

Oakley Park Recreational Center features picnic and play areas with tennis courts as well as an aquatic area including a swimming pool, slide, diving board and splash pad. Baseball fields are also available. 

Two of Cincinnati’s largest and most beautiful parks, Ault Park and Alms Park, are nearby. 

Lunken Playfield (public) offers tennis, archery, golf, and baseball with a 10-minute drive.

Charming Oakley Square has quite a few local restaurants, pubs and boutiques including the iconic Aglamesis Ice Cream Parlor. King Arthurs Court Toys and Blue Manatee Literacy Project are popular destinations for those with young ones. Habit’s Cafe, The Sleepy Bee Cafe and Red Feather Kitchen are just a few examples of where to have a meal. The Twentieth Century Theatre which was built in 1941 is a registered historic building and the site for concerts and private events. The square is the site for several community events including Oakley After Hours. 

Kroger Marketplace (the second largest in the world), Target, Meijer, and other national brand stores are conveniently located in Oakley Station at the former site of The Cincinnati Milling Machine Company. This village-like area, has newly built apartments that are a stone’s throw from restaurants and stores. 

MadTree Brewing has its facilities on Madison Road and is a very popular place to enjoy a crafted brew in its tap room or beer garden. 

Hyde Park Plaza offers two major grocery stores and many specialty shops. Nearby is the Rookwood Pavilion and Rookwood Commons with many national brand stores and restaurants. Kenwood Towne Centre and Sycamore Plaza are approximately a 10-minute drive with many more shopping and dining opportunities.

Oakley is seen as a more-affordable neighborhood with ever increasing property values as compared to nearby Hyde Park and Mt. Lookout. The many oak-lined streets and shopping within walking distance offer much to the people who live in Oakley. Convenience is highly regarded here with downtown only 12 minutes away. Oakley is a neighborly area surrounded by many prestigious neighborhoods, which have contributed to its growth. Oakley is now one of Cincinnati’s most popular areas with young professionals. One finds older homes (many renovated to keep up with today’s living demands) as well as new condominiums and apartments in this area.

I-71 and the Norwood lateral are easily accessed from Oakley. It is a 12-minute drive to the University of Cincinnati. Queen City Metro buses serve the area on a regular schedule with a ride time of approximately 15 minutes to downtown.

In a ten-block area are two public parks (Kennedy Park and Daniel Drake Park) and a play field, where nature study, swimming and tennis lessons and the other recreational features are conducted. The Kennedy Heights Arts Center is housed in the former home of Lewis Kennedy, This 21-room historic landmark now houses all types of arts – from exhibits, concerts, summer camps, creative writing, artist salons, photography and more. The Kennedy Heights Center Lindner Annex includes artist studios, event space, performing arts classes and a gallery. Winterfest is an annual event for the community in early December. The annual SAP 5k Walk/Run in the spring includes breakfast for the participants. And the annual Progressive Dinner and Silent Auction is held each fall and starts at the Kennedy Heights Arts Center and then spreads to hosting homes. Cincinnati Gardens is about 10 minutes away. In addition to spectator sports, the Gardens provides many other events.

Besides the usual retail shops along Montgomery Road in Kennedy Heights itself, one is about ten minutes from Kenwood Towne Centre and  Sycamore Plaza, where branches of Cincinnati’s largest and finest department stores are found. There is also a large shopping district along Ridge Road 10 minutes away.

The fine homes in Kennedy Heights represent many architectural styles, ranging from New England Cape Cods to English Tudors. There are also homes and attractive apartment buildings shaded by magnificent trees. Newcomers will find Kennedy Heights a friendly community of well-kept lawns, lovely gardens and brick facades. The spirit is contemporary, but there’s a traditional zest for accomplishment. Many new things are happening here.

Cincinnati buses afford easy access to downtown Cincinnati. There is easy access to roads leading out of the city--5 minutes to I-71, I-75 and I-275 and Ronald Reagan Highway. Driving time to downtown is 20 minutes.
