Just outside the city numerous lakes, state forests and preserves are just waiting for the outdoor lover to come explore. Adams Lake State Park is a well-known fishing site; several state nature preserves are home to rare butterflies, unusual dolomite cliffs and sinkholes. The Edge of Appalachia Preserve covers 12,000 acres of woodlands and is drawing national attention for its scenic beauty. There’s lots to do here both indoors and out; West Union is where Adam’s County comes to play.

This is where most Adams County residents come to shop. As the county seat, abundant shopping can be found either downtown or in the nearby shopping areas southeast of West Union on St. Rt. 247. West Union features its own department store and numerous specialty shops. A must to visit is Blake’s Pharmacy that houses one of three historic soda fountains left in the state.

For such a small town, West Union is rich in history and has become the focal point of the county. 3000 residents call this town home. It’s a bustling town, where daily activities revolve around the Courthouse, shopping and hospital. It’s big enough to offer all the services you’ll want, but small enough to know everyone by name. Next to turn of the century buildings you’ll find traditional ranches and modest frame homes. New residents looking for the charm of small town life will find the pastoral charms of Adams County just may woo them to stay.

West Union

At 70 miles from Cincinnati, West Union is a five-minute drive off the James A. Rhodes Appalachian Highway (St. Rt. 32). The city sits at the junction of St. Rt. 125, St. Rt. 41 and St Rt. 247, providing a central location for most county services. St. Rt. 41 is also known as Zane’s Trace, Ohio’s first authorized road. Alexander Salamon Airport serves the region. Dayton International Airport is 60 minutes away. The Greater Cincinnati International Airport is a 80-90 minute drive to Northern Kentucky.

Life moves at a slower pace in Peebles providing plenty of time for recreation. Outdoor pursuits abound in this lushly wooded region, like hunting and fishing at the nearby Brush Creek State Forest and Tranquility Wildlife Area. As part of the 200 mile Southern Ohio loop of the Birding National Heritage Trail, Peebles is becoming known as a good spring site for migrating warblers and summer specialties. For recreation of a different type, Southern State Community College’s south campus is within minutes, and houses the only site in Ohio for the Appalachian Gateway Center focusing on regional heritage, culture and history.

Daily needs like groceries and gas can be found here, but a more involved shopping trip will need a hop in the car to nearby West Union. Large shopping centers are in Dayton, or Cincinnati. If you are a collector of fossils and minerals, one of the best trilobite collectors in the U.S. lives in Peebles, and both sells and displays his unique collection. Ask anyone in town for directions to the House of Phacops!

The village of Peebles lies in the northeastern part of the county. At 1.2 square miles with a population of just 1,800, Peebles is relatively small giving residents a change to know just about everyone in town. Named after area businessman John Peebles, the town embraces the nearby Amish community known for their furniture and bakery businesses. Although a small village, Peebles hosts a world-renowned site for jet engine testing at the six thousand acre General Electric Peebles Test Operation site. Peebles is perhaps best known for its proximity to Serpent Mound-the largest and finest serpent effigy in the United States.  A museum and park at the site attracts historians and tourists from around the world.

The Ohio River, as in the past, continues to direct the pace of life in Manchester. Historically settlers came to Manchester on flatboats. They came ashore, dismantled their boat and used the hardwood planks to build their new homes. In 1790, one of these new settlers, surveyor Nathaniel Massie named the town after his hometown of Manchester, England.  It was the fourth permanent settlement in Ohio. Manchester is perhaps best known for its Ohio River Islands, now a National Wildlife Refuge. The glacial melt-waters of the islands provide a refuge for birds, fish and other wildlife. The original three islands have shrunk to two; one island has been reclaimed by the shifting course of the Ohio River

65 miles southeast from downtown Cincinnati, Manchester is along the Ohio River on US Rt. 52 at the intersection of St. Rt. 136. A trip to the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport depending on traffic flow averages 75-90 minutes. Alexander Salamon Airport in nearby West Union provides service for small aircraft.

In town the Seaman Lions Community Park downtown hosts a lot of the town activities centered at the attractive gazebo. As in the rest of Adams County, the outdoor enthusiasts have lots to keep them busy. Nearby the 3500-acre Tranquility Wildlife Area features public areas for hunting, fishing and hiking. The hill region is rich in wildlife sightings, including deer, wild turkey, and grouse with the occasional spotting of a bobcats or a bear. Tranquility has a newly renovated shooting range that’s becoming a popular destination for rifle, pistol and shotgun use.

A larger shopping area is about 15 minutes away in West Union; larger shopping malls are about 40 minutes away in Clermont County. Seaman is also home to a unique store-the Singing Coyote Indian Center that highlights the Native American Arts and Crafts of the region.

Seaman’s a place where time stands still; it’s the kind of town where you’ll still see clothes drying outside on a clothesline and folks wave from the porch as you drive by. Seaman is small town America with the town listed as just about one square mile. About 1000 people live in the neatly tended lots perched on the edges of surrounding farmland. In 1887 Seaman began as a railroad town founded at the junction of the Cincinnati and Eastern Railway and the Old West Union Road.  For almost a century Seaman has hosted an annual “Fall Festival” making it one of the oldest festivals in the state.

Flip a coin to determine which is the closest hospital- Clermont Mercy Hospital to the west, or Adams County Regional Medical Center to the east. Both are about 40 minutes away along Rt. 32. Clermont Mercy is in the midst of an $18 million expansion to be completed by 2008 that will increase its Intensive care beds, and add additional services. Adams County Regional Medical Center is also expanding. It’s transitioning from a small county-owned hospital in nearby West Union, to a larger location near Seaman along Ohio 32. Plans call for the hospital to double in size adding a bigger emergency department, upgraded cancer services, and more operating rooms. The new location is expected to open in November 2006.

Fishermen are often found at the well-stocked Winchester Reservoir just outside of town. Archers get some practice in at the Trail-n-Arrow Archery Center. Food lovers come each August to Winchester to sample delights at the annual Caramel Festival. As with life in other rural areas, Winchester residents find time to pursue their own interests of gardening, hiking and hunting.

Tucked into the gently rolling hills of northwestern Adams County, the village of Winchester was known for its railroad stations, both above and “underground”. Within its not quite three mile town radius, Winchester became a major railroad shipping point between Cincinnati and Portsmouth after the Civil War. About the same time abolitionists moved into the area and assisted runaway slaves. Winchesters first resident physician, Dr. A.C. Lewis, used his stately home to hide slaves. Today it’s a National Historic Registered site. About 1000 residents share the village spirit and its simple charms.

Adams Lake State Park is a 47-acre lake with beautiful, wooded surroundings. Bass fishing, boating, camping, biking and hiking are some of the fun activities. Ohio Brush Creek has fishing, boating and wildlife viewing. 

"The Edge" (of the Appalachian Plateau) is a natural conservancy with forests and plains. Trails are provided for exploring. For those into ancient history, the Serpent Mound is the world's largest effigy mound in existence. 

The Adams County Quilt Trail is the nation's first! See 20+ quilts painted on barns throughout the county. The Buckeye Trail has scenic backcountry roads and hiking trails. 

The Wheat Ridge Festival is an annual October affair and celebrates the harvest season.

The Wheat Ridge Amish community has many shops, featuring bread, pies and other bakery items; lumber, millers and furniture; as well as other small businesses. Miller's Bakery & Furniture is a popular place to browse and buy.

The Olde Wayside Inn which was built in 1804 is one of the oldest buildings in Adams County and is the oldest standing inn in Ohio that is still in use. Numerous important dignitaries stayed at this inn, including Kentucky Senator Henry Clay and President Andrew Jackson. The building has provided housing and food to travelers since its founding.
