Adams County

Adams Township was named for President John Quincy Adams and is one of ten Ohio townships named “Adams”.  The township was formed in 1849 from parts of Chester, Vernon and Union townships.

Established in 1891 by Matthew Addy, the village of Addyston is located 10 miles west of downtown Cincinnati along the beautiful banks of the Ohio River. It was built by the Ohio Pipe Foundry for its employees and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. There is no home delivery of mail in Addyston as all 1,000 residents are required to pick up mail directly from the Post Office on Main Street.

Twelve miles south of Cincinnati along U.S. 27, in the heart of Campbell County, is Alexandria. Named after Alexandria, Virginia, the home of its first settlers, the town was laid out in the early part of 19th century, but was not incorporated until 1856. Alexandria has been the county seat of Campbell County since 1840. There are 8,500 residents.

The country-like atmosphere of Amberley Village, named for a village in England, has been carefully preserved through the years. It has 3,600 residents and is a Tree City USA per the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Amelia was settled in 1809 with log cabins at its first homes. A sawmill was built around 1826 followed by the construction of several other mills. The area was hence called Milltown which turned into Milton. In 1836 the village was renamed Amelia in honor of Amelia Bowdoin, a popular tollgate operator on the Ohio Turnpike. Once an area where only farmers and artisans lived, the natural country charms of the village of Amelia are being rediscovered. Many have already invested in beautifully wooded building sites of fast growing value. There are 4,800 residents in the village.  You will find several large businesses in Amelia including: L3, TQL, American Modern Insurance, Milacron Plastics, to name a few. In 2019, Amelia residents voted to surrender village powers and become unincorporated areas as part of Pierce and Batavia Townships.

Among rolling hills and unspoiled woodland lies Anderson Township, bounded by the Little Miami and Ohio River which helped shape its character. The community was founded in 1793 with its first settlement near the mouth of the Little Miami River. In the early 1800s, pioneers were scattered into settlements along the Little Miami and as time passed people lived up on the hill near Mt. Washington. Growth occurred with farming outposts at Forestville, Sweetwine, Fruit Hill and Cherry Grove. The township developed with suburban growth after World War II. With the completion of the Beechmont Levee, I-275 and I-471, residents could easily reach the various parts of Cincinnati and the area grew. Anderson Township now has the fourth highest population in  Hamilton County with 45,000 residents.

John W. Carey, Josiah Green and John Munch were early pioneers who came to Anna in 1883. The village was established in 1858. The village was originally named Carey’s Station, but changed to Anna in honor of  Mr. Carey’s daughter. Grain and lumber were the first industries in Anna.

Arcanum is located in Darke County in the state of Ohio’s agricultural belt and it’s motto is: A Destination Place.  Founded in 1849 by William Gunder, the area was incorporated into a village in 1858.

Arlington Heights was settled in 1883 and is known as the “village between lanes” as it is located between north- and south-bound Interstate 75.

Augusta is the home of the actor George Clooney, television journalist Nick Clooney and family, former home of singer Rosemary Clooney, and birthplace of Miss America 2000, Heather Renee French Henry. In the last quarter century, Augusta has been best known as the site of three major films: Michner’s Centennial, PBS’ Huckleberry Finn, and Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers.

The village of Bainbridge is located in Ross County, Ohio along Paint Creek and was established by General Nathaniel Massie. The village was named for Commodore William Bainbridge who served in the Battle of 1812. Bainbridge is known as the site of the first dental school in the world that was established by Dr. John M. Harris in 1828. The school is now a museum.

Batavia Township is one of 14 townships in Clermont County and is named after Batavia, New York, which was home to many of the settlers. The area was first surveyed in 1788 for Francis Minnis (a captain in the American Revolution.) The first settler was Ezekiel Dimmitt and his wife who built a cabin where the post office now stands on W. Main Street in 1797.

Batesville, nicknamed "The Best Little City in America", is conveniently located in the triangle between Indianapolis IN, Cincinnati OH and Louisville KY, providing "small town living" within an hour's drive of the three major metropolitan areas.

Beckett Ridge is suburbia at its finest. A perfect place for golf enthusiasts at the Beckett Ridge Golf Club, Beckett Ridge also has its own maze of walking/running trails. A great place to “get away from it all”, Beckett Ridge is just 30 minutes from Downtown Cincinnati.

The area was settled in the 1840s and incorporated in 1867. The Made River and Lake Erie Railroad had a railroad line through the area with a water stop station in Belle Center which helped with its growth. Its name came from its location between Bellefontaine and Kenton, Ohio. (Historically, the village of Belle Center’s name has also been spelled Belle Centre, Bellecenter and Bellecente.) The Belle Center Public Library is one of two independent libraries in Logan County.

Bellevue was named after the Revolutionary war hero General James Taylor, one of the wealthiest men in Kentucky after the Civil War. He named the city, Bellevue (Beautiful View) after a creek near his plantation in Virginia. Not only did he name the city, but he also promptly named most of the streets in the historic district – Lafayette Avenue, Taylor Avenue, Washington Avenue, etc... One can visit his home on the East Row Historic District in nearby Newport.

The Village of Blanchester was settled by Joseph and John Blancett in 1832. The community is 7.6 square miles with 4,000 residents. Clarence “Bud” Brown who served in the US House of Representatives and as a Secretary of Commerce in the 1980s is from this community.

With a population of 12,000 Blue Ash is a vibrant Cincinnati city suburb. The area was established around 1791 and its name comes from the blue ash logs used by the first settlers. The Blue Ash of today is alive with development. Condos, single-family houses and beautiful industrial parks are all part of what is happening in this carefully planned area just twelve miles from downtown Cincinnati. It has been rated as top-50 community by Cincy Magazine. Blue Ash is represented by 50 Fortune 500 companies.

Founded as a railroad suburb and temperance community in 1871 next to the Mill Creek, Bond Hill is primarily a residential neighborhood that offers a variety of homes from classic Tudors set on majestically in wooded landscapes to newly built houses.

The village of Bowersville has less than 400 residents. It was founded in 1848 and named after Peter Bowermaster who was a store owner in the area. Norman Vincent Peale was born in this village.

The Village of Bradford is located in Newberry and Adams Townships in Miami and Darke Counties, with most residents living in the Miami County area. The village was established in 1857 when it was forest land, prairies and swamp land. The Cincinnati, Columbus & Indiana Railroad Company constructed a roundhouse in Bradford, making the village a more vibrant place to live. Major League Baseball plater Allen Sutton Sothoron is a native of Bradford.

Bridgetown is located in Green Township and is named after Bridgeton, New Jersey, the home of early settlers from 1820. Since the early part of this century, Bridgetown has developed from farmland of rolling fields and green pastures into a busy, active community, but still retaining a casual lifestyle. There are 14,000 residents in the area.

Bromley residents occasionally refer to the city as Dixie, or Crescent Park. Charles Collins, an 1848 landowner, named the city. Collins acquired most of the 2,000 acres and bought the historic property called the Landmark residence. As a historic home, it’s the oldest dwelling in Kenton County. He laid out the first city streets and named the city Bromley after his hometown in England. Most of Bromley’s streets are named in honor of early Kentucky pioneers and politicians.

Serving as the county seat of Boone County, the village of Burlington has the charm of the old and the excitement of the new. There are 11,000 area residents.

Butler once boasted the state’s longest wooden-covered bridge. Designed as a double-truss burr bridge, it was 456 feet long. When it was completed in 1871 the bridge served until it was damaged and torn down following the devastating flood of 1937.

A quiet little village of 287 residents in Northeast Warren County, Butlerville is about 35 miles from Downtown Cincinnati and three miles from Pleasant Plain.

Byrd Township has 1,000 residents and is located in Brown County. There are no municipalities in the township. Unincorporated Decatur is located in the east section of the township.

California

California, Kentucky sits on the banks of the Ohio River along Route 8. There are less than 100 residents residing in California. While technically only .25 square miles, some consider California to stretch a bit up the hill to unincorporated Carthage, Kentucky.

The village of Camden is located in Preble County. There is a population of 2,000 residents.

Located just six miles from downtown Cincinnati, Camp Washington was the site of muster and drill grounds of the first and second regiments of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The “Camp” was also the location of the first Ohio State Fair. 

 Camp Washington is a manufacturing area and has been the location for over 150 businesses including the Hillshire Farm & Kahn’s Company, Andrew Jergens Company (now KAO Brands), Queen City Sausage, Meyer Tool and Osborne Coinage. It is also home to 1,763 residents who enjoy living in the “Camp”.

Carrollton, Kentucky is located about 60 miles south of Cincinnati and 60 miles north of Louisville. It sits at the confluence of the Kentucky River and Ohio River. The city’s population has held steady since the 1970s at just under 4,000 residents.

A Mill Creek Valley community, Carthage is seven miles north of downtown Cincinnati. The area was settled around 1790 with Jacob White’s Station, a blockhouse built at the third Mill Creek crossing. The area was rural throughout most of the 19th century and was incorporated in 1861. Carthage became part of Cincinnati in 1911. Horse racing was popular for this community and meets were featured at the Carthage Fair Grounds (now the Hamilton County Fairgrounds) until the 1960s.

The village of Casstown is located in Miami County. The population is under 300 residents. The village is named after Lewis Cass, a U.S. senator from Michigan who was also an 1848 presidential candidate.

Celina was established in 1834 by James Watson Riley. It is named after the town Salina, New York. During the late 1800s, the area grew due to the discovery of oil and natural gas deposits. There are now over 10,000 residents in Celina.

Centerville has the largest collection of early stone houses in the state of Ohio, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was founded in 1796 and is one of the oldest communities in Ohio. The heart of the city is designated as an architectural preservation district to maintain the historic heritage.

Established in 1810 Chester Township is located in Clinton County, Ohio and has over 1,700 residents. It is one of five Chester Township in the state of Ohio.

Cheviot was founded in 1818 by John Craig and became a city in 1932. The name Cheviot derives from the Cheviot Tavern built in 1800.

Christiansburg is located in Champaign County and has 500 residents. Joshua Howell established the village in 1808, naming it after Christiansburg, Virginia.

Clifton was incorporated as a village in 1850 with the growth of Cincinnati suburbs and was annexed as part of Cincinnati in 1896. In the early 1900s, the University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union College were established and the area gained great esteem as the intellectual center of Cincinnati. Today, Clifton is an “in-city suburb” and is a distinctive neighborhood with its cultural diversity. It is a great place to call home for those who enjoy daily city life in a suburban setting.

Cold Spring acquired its name from a fresh, cold water spring that still flows underground. There are 5,900 residents. Rumor is that Daniel Boone had 500 acres in the area in return for his service in the Revolutionary War. He sold the land in 1785. The area was then settled around 1789.

Colerain Township was settled in 1790 by John Dunlap of Coleraine, Ireland. The great forests and farmlands that once dominated this area have given way to shaded streets and large traditional homes on spacious grounds. Today Colerain Township is the second largest township in Ohio with 42.9 square miles and over 58,000 residents.

Named after two colleges which were established here, College Hill still reflects the elegance and aristocracy that influenced this community during the 19th century. In fact, many of the streets are still gas-lit. This urban village offers many styles of homes from old to new.

The restoration in Columbia-Tusculum is preserving the distinctive historical character of the area. There's an abundance of old frame homes with high ceilings, wood floors, and many decorative elements like gingerbread and steam boat gothic. Stately Victorians are pleasantly situated on the hillside. In recent years, the addition of contemporary homes, condominiums, popular restaurants and meeting places have created an air of sophistication. Each building, old and new, has its own architectural integrity.

Corinth

Corryville is located southeast of Clifton in Cincinnati, Ohio. Corryville was settled by German Americans and later annexed as part of Cincinnati in 1870. The area was named after William Corry, an early mayor of Cincinnati and prominent landowner.

Covington is Northern Kentucky’s largest city and is the fifth largest city in Kentucky. The city is currently undergoing a dynamic surge of growth and renovation. The city is located between the Licking and Ohio Rivers and has a population of 43,000 residents. The city was founded in 1814.

The village of Covington in Miami County has 2,500 residents. It was incorporated in 1835 and was first known as Fort Rowdy in 1793.

In the early 1800s, Revolutionary War veterans began carving farms out of the Northern Kentucky wilderness. By the 1890’s Crescent Springs became one of the many unscheduled train stops along the Cincinnati Southern Line that ran from Ludlow to Somerset. More passengers were choosing to live ‘out in the country’ so a railroad depot was built at the ‘Y’ intersection where Western Reserve meets Crescent Springs-Erlanger Road.

Crestview Hills was originally part of the Old Buffalo Trail to Big Bone Lick. The area was settled around 1785 prospered henceforth. In the 1920s, residential development was established and homes were constructed. Following WWII, even more new homes were built.

The Whitewater Shaker Settlement, the fourth and last Shaker community established in Ohio, stands today near New Haven in Crosby Township. Using a standard economy based on seed production and broom manufacturing, the Whitewater Shaker community prospered into the early 20th century. The Hamilton County Park District purchased the twenty original Shaker buildings still standing.

Cumminsville was incorporated in 1865 and annexed with Cincinnati in 1873. It was originally populated by German immigrants. The northern part of the area later was called Northside while the southern area is called South Cumminsville. The area grew through the 1920s with shops, businesses and manufacturing. Knowlton’s Corner was one of the busiest commercial areas in Cincinnati. Following WWII, with the grow of automobiles and highways, the demand for housing in the area waned. By the 1960s, most industry in the area had left.

Cynthiana is located 60 miles south of Cincinnati and 28 miles northeast of Lexington along the banks of the southern fork of the Licking River. Cynthiana is the county seat of Harrison County and has approximately 6200 residents. Cynthiana features a number of tree-lined streets with Cape Cod houses and mid-century brick homes.

Downtown Dayton has set about revitalizing itself by adding different amenities such as Schuster Center for the Performing Arts; Day Air Ballpark – home of the Dayton Dragons; Riverscape – a beautifully landscaped performing venue; as well as a pedestrian and bike friendly starting point that leads to hundreds of miles of bike paths and trails. Additionally, lots of housing has been added such as townhouses, lofts and rental options.If urban is your interest, downtown Dayton is where its at with restaurants, entertainment, brew pubs, banks and other retail options – and all within walking distance. More than 300 performances occur in downtown Dayton every year.

Dayton is the northernmost community in Kentucky and has 5,300 residents. Located along the Ohio River bank, Dayton is opening its picturesque waterfront to potential commercialism. 

The Ohio River has always played an important role with Dayton. Historically, the area had sand beaches along the riverfront that drew many visitors. Pollution in the river ruined these beaches and the river level was finally raised with dams – thus destroying all beach fronts. During its heyday, Dayton featured many hotels for steamboat passengers. The city had a ferry boat that transported passengers into Cincinnati daily. Many of the older Dayton homes have widow walks with views of the Ohio River.

Earlier in the century, herds of deer came to this thickly wooded area to drink from the many streams and brooks.

Formed in 1803, the year Ohio became a state, Deerfield Township got its name from the large numbers of deer that stopped at local “deer licks”, or salt licks. In the 1800s the area was a crossroad for commerce. William Mason (a veteran from the Revolutionary War) purchased land in 1815. The town of Mason was later named after him.

DeMossville, Kentucky sits along the Licking River in Pendleton County, 30 miles south of Cincinnati. As of 2010, the population was 1,976 residents.

As one of Cincinnati’s inner-ring bedroom communities, Dillonvale and its nearby neighbor Kenwood, experienced explosive growth after World War II. Hamilton County residents looking for a place to call home liked the area’s gently rolling hills and shady sites and moved here by the hundreds forming a close-knit community.

Dover, Kentucky sits along the Ohio River in Mason County. As of 2013, the population was 249 residents. Dover is located 7.5 miles southeast of Augusta, Kentucky and 13 miles northwest of Maysville.

Eagle Township in Brown County has approximately 1,300 residents. In 1819, former slaves of Samuel Gist  moved to the township onto 2,000 acres with funds from the estate of Gist and was one of several Gist settlements.

The East End is a linear-shaped community located along seven miles along the Ohio River banks, ending at Lunken Airport.

Few areas match the beauty of spacious Eastgate. There are colorful communities with park-like atmospheres everywhere. Many of the neighborhoods have rolling hills and are located picturesquely along tree-lined streams.

Edgewood, one of Northern Kentucky’s largest suburbs, has an appealing All-American quality with its 9,400 residents. Edgewood was incorporated in 1948. In 1968, it merged with Summit Hills Heights and Pius Heights.

Elmwood Place is an older, urban neighborhood with many homes built in the early 1900s and 1920s.

Elsmere was first settled in 1885 and was originally known as South Erlanger. Incorporated as the City of Elsmere in 1896, it sits on the border of Boone and Kenton County between Erlanger and Florence.  There are 8,400 residents and the city is named after Elsmere Avenue in Norwood, Ohio – the hometown of one of its founders.

Englewood

Enon, which means abundance of springs, is the home of the second largest conical mound in Ohio. It’s situated in the middle of downtown on an old Indian trail, which ran between the Indian Villages of Old Piqua and Old Chillicothe. Settlers came to the area in the late 1700s and the town was incorporated in 1850 and there are now 2,500 residents .

Erlanger is third-largest city in Kenton County with a population of 18,000+ residents. The area was settled around 1807 with a log cabin. The community grew through time and was originally called Timberlake, then Greenwood and Silver Lake. The city was finally named after the Parisian family bank of Emile d’Erlanger that helped finance the town’s development.

In 1796, the land was purchased by James Lyon from John Cleves Symmes and was farmland until 1875 when it was platted east of Montgomery Road. With the railroad system, the new subdivisions called Idlewood and Ivanhoe were established west of Montgomery Road. The area was later renamed Evanston after Evanston, Illinois in 1893. This bedroom suburb was a small population with no businesses. In 1903, the neighborhood annexed with Cincinnati. Evanston is the birthplace of actress Doris Day.
