West College Corner, IN
The state line between Indiana and Ohio exactly straddles the town and also its one and only elementary school and was once the feature story of the CBS News Sunday magazine show.
Five miles northwest of Oxford, Ohio just as you cross the state line into Indiana lies the village of West College Corner. Union County Indiana is farm country with wide open fields dotted with tiny villages and cities. While tiny at only 634 residents, West College Corner residents wouldn’t have it any other way. The village clusters a few homes, but most residents live and farm their own land and have for many generations. The downtown War memorial and adjacent park benches provide a place to sit and visit while doing your daily chores at the store, restaurant, or post office.
US 27 crosses from Ohio into Indiana and provides the primary access to the village. I-275, the circle freeway surrounding Cincinnati is about a 30-minute drive south.
West College Corner is served by the McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, located in the heart of Oxford or Fayette Memorial Hospital in Connersville.
Daily needs can be met in West College Corner, but anything more extensive will need a drive in the car. In Ohio, the historic Uptown District of Oxford hosts several unique restaurants and eclectic shops. Northgate Mall, containing nearly 100 stores, is located approximately 30 minutes south in Colerain Township. In Indiana, Connersville offers plenty of shopping as well as antique and specialty stores.
You’ll need to take a drive to find something to do here. Miami University's campus in nearly Oxford offers a wide range of cultural, educational and athletic events too numerous to mention. Wide-open spaces allow Union County residents the space to tackle any outdoor pursuits. Hueston Woods State Park, less than 15 minutes away, offers miles of scenic hiking trails, fishing and boating on 625 acre Acton Lake, an 18 hole golf course, naturalist programs, a nature center with a display of live animals and much more. Whitewater State Memorial Park’s 200-acre lake offers access to the 5200 acre Brookville Lake as the primary spot for recreational boating in the county.
