Southeastern Indiana

Dearborn County Hospital and Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville serve immediate needs. The Community Mental Health Facility in Lawrenceburg offers services for southeastern Indiana. Air Care will transport to Cincinnati hospitals for major trauma care.

Watching the river is a popular pastime in all these river towns for both locals and tourists.  Located just a few minutes out of town on St. Rt. 156, Markland Dam Park provides picnic shelters, playgrounds, baseball fields and access to fishing. Vevay also has a 37-acre Riverfront Park, with a boat ramp, ball fields, camping and more. Some of the finest hunting in Southeastern Indiana is nearby. If golf is your game, two nearby gold courses offer a challenge. Nearby gambling boats offer Las Vegas gaming, Indiana-style. Like most of the river towns along the Ohio River Scenic Byway, just meandering down the road catches a different view around every bend.

Downtown Vevay offers antique, collectibles, crafts and gift shops along with distinctive restaurants. Danner's Hardware is the oldest business still operating on the same site in Indiana with daily tours to see the original safe and memorabilia. More shops and artists retreats can be found winding along the nearby roads.

The new settlers planted one of their favorite crops, grapes, and established the first commercial winery in the United States. Although Vevay is the largest town and county seat of Switzerland County, only 1700 people call the small 1.5-mile square town home.

60 minutes downriver from Cincinnati, Vevay is located at the junction of St. Rt. 56 and St. Rt. 156.

Versailles residents can drive a short distance in either direction to reach two regional community hospitals: Margaret Mary Community Hospital 16 miles away in Batesville, or King’s Daughters Hospital and Health Services 22 miles away in Madison.

The Ripley County Historical Society is well known for its archives, historical information, and museum. Many historical homes and buildings line the Versailles streets, including the Fernando G. Taylor House (where the Ripley County Tourism Bureau office is located) and Tyson United Methodist Church, which are both on the National Register of Historic Places. Signs for Morgan's Raid are located on and near the square to mark the famous raid of 1863, and a driving tour of the raid is available. Recreation takes many forms here; the Southeastern Indiana YMCA is located in nearby Batesville. Versailles State Park, located just outside town off U.S. 50, is the second largest state park in Indiana. Annually the park draws over 400,000 people for camping, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and more. The park also hosts an annual Bluegrass festival.  The historic Busching Bridge near the park entrance was built in 1885. With festivals and farmers markets, as well as old-fashioned pursuits like muzzle loading and turkey calling, there’s a country feel to life here.

Most of your shopping needs can be served in town, but for more extensive shopping a ride in the car is necessary.

Founded in 1818 on a hundred-acre tract, Versailles was named in honor of founder John DePauw’s native city in France. Versailles is located in rural Ripley County, in the southeastern corner of Indiana 52 miles from Cincinnati. 1800 residents reside in the 1.5 miles of the town. This is beautiful, peaceful countryside with many miles of country roads. Picturesque Laughery Creek flows through the area. As the county seat, Versailles is home to the Ripley County Courthouse and other government, political, historic and social activities.

Heading west out of Cincinnati along U.S. Rt. 50, you’ll travel a scenic 50 miles to reach Versailles. Greater Cincinnati International Airport is 42 miles away, with regional airports, North Vernon, and Greensburg/Decatur less than a 20-minute drive.

Osgood Volunteer Fire Department provides fire and EMS service. A satellite building of Margaret Mary Community Hospital provides general care for residents, or you can drive a short distance in either direction to reach two regional community hospitals: Margaret Mary Community Hospital 14 miles away in Batesville, or King’s Daughters Hospital and Health Services 25 miles away in Madison.

Osgood is home to the Ripley County Fairgrounds where the 4-H Fair is held each July; events such as car races and horse activities are also held there through the year. Artisans will enjoy the drive to see the artwork of sculpture Dale Loughery, whose whimsical iron works are scattered through town. Recreation is found at nearby Versailles State Park.

Shoppers will browse the antique and gift shops, but a larger shopping trip needs a jump in the car to nearby Versailles or Batesville.

Located in the southeast corner of Indiana Osgood’s 1,700 residentsAre spread along the villages 1.3 miles. Osgood today is seeing many changes  due to the generous gift of more than $23 million from the Gilmore and Golda Reynolds Foundation to assist the town government as well as local non-profit organizations. The past is evident, though, in many of the beautiful homes and buildings.

Madison has been called the ‘”Prettiest Small Town in the Midwest” by the Ladies Home Journal. There’s always something to do in Madison. Art festivals, historic sites, museums, theater, music, and numerous local artisans fill the days with activity. The Lanier Mansion is an iconic gem. Southern Indiana is a nationally recognized wine region with three award-winning wineries located within minutes of Madison. Hanover College (is the oldest private college in Indiana and) offers sports and cultural activities throughout the year. Boaters use the waterfront access to the Ohio River for water sports. The Madison Regatta hosts a nationally ranked hydroplane-racing event. Whether you are an avid wildlife watcher, hiker, or simply enjoy the great outdoors, Clifty Falls State Park has something for everyone.  Hikers enjoy trails ranging from “easy” to “rugged” and behold amazing views. The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge Area is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and is located nearby.

Madison is also known as an antique shopping destination in the Midwest. Numerous specialty shops, unique restaurants and quaint B&B’s compliment the historic downtown. Most Jefferson County residents come here to shop for all their food and retail needs.

Nestled along the Ohio River Valley, Madison has always been the center of transportation, industry and commerce for the entire southeastern Indiana region. Founded in 1809, Madison today is thecounty seat  for Jefferson County, making it the destination for political, economic and social activities of the county. Boats and barges still pass on the great northern bend of the Ohio River, surrounded by scenic limestone bluffs. While much of the surrounding southern Indiana region is fertile farmland, 1300 residents have found a home in this charming tree-covered Indiana city.

Madison

Madison is a scenic 75-mile drive from Cincinnati through rolling rural countryside, following US Rt. 50 to State Rt. 421. Indiana Rt. 56 also bisects the downtown.
