Fort Thomas, known as “The City of Beautiful Homes,” is over 145 years old. In 1877 the United States Army selected Fort Thomas as a site for a military post because of its lovely rolling highlands and location overlooking the Ohio River. The city is named in honor of General George Henry Thomas. There are still remnants from the time when the city was a fortification. A stone water tower is now a landmark and stands at the front of Tower Park.

A large armory offers gymnasium facilities which are open to all ages at designated times. Volleyball leagues are formed each fall for indoor fun. The Armory Gymnasium and Rec Center is located here along with picnic areas, walking trails, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, play areas, baseball field and an amphitheater. Fort Thomas hosts several events annually including a holiday walk as well as an Independence Day Celebration with a classic car show, music, food and a parade.
