The area was first called Crewitts Creek. It became “Independence” when Campell County split away and Kenton County was then created in 1840. The city of Independence serves as the county seat of Kenton County and features the traditional white courthouse in the town square. The community has both a rural and suburban mix as well as new developments – each complimenting the other. There are 25,000 residents who live in Independence.
There are numerous basketball courts and baseball fields in Independence. Pee Wee football and knothole baseball are available for boys and girls. Various clubs and organizations are in the area. Kenton Golf Course, a public course, is nearby. The Kenton YMCA has a summer children’s program. The city hosts many summer events called Family Fun Nights at the Amphitheater in Memorial Park including puppet and magic shows, movies and concerts. In addition the city sponsors an Easter Egg Hunt, Memorial Day Parade, Fourth of July celebration and an annual Christmas Walk.
There are seven parks in Independence. "Glenhurst Park" is four acres and features a play area and walking trails. "Independence Park" is also a four-acre park and features playground equipment alongside the green spaces. "Marion Schadler Park" is a smaller park with one and one-half acres. This park has play equipment and a picnic shelter area. "Memorial Park" is where the Senior Citizen and Community Center is located on its 26 acres. You will find play equipment, walking trails, a field, an amphitheater, a picnic shelter and a paved track. "Shadybrook Park" has 17.5 acres amd features soccer fields, basketball courts and playground equipment. "Sterling Staggs Park" has baseball and soccer fields, volleyball court, playground area and a picnic shelter on its five acres. "Lincoln Woods Park" has 15 acres and features two tennis courts, a basketball court, playground areas, picnic shelter and two ball fields.
