About Brooksville
Introduction
Brooksville contains one of the stops along the scenic Bracken County Barn Quilt Tour, celebrating the region’s quilting heritage and historic barns and architecture.
Summary
43 miles from Cincinnati, Brooksville sits at the center of Bracken County. As Bracken’s county seat, the village began as the settlement Woodward's Crossroads in the late 1700s. The county seat was moved from nearby Augusta in 1839, and the town was renamed Brookville after legislator David Brooks. A post office opened in 1842, later changing the village’s name to Brooksville. The town itself is less than a mile wide but its packed full of everything county residents need from banks, to hardware and insurance companies. Just over 600 people call this home ensuring that there’s plenty of room to call your own. This is primarily a farming community, and Brooksville is where social, political and entertainment needs are met. Housing ranges from farmhouses to turn of the century construction.
Transportation
Brooksville sits at the intersection of St. Rt.19 and 10 in the center of rural Bracken County. Greater Cincinnati International Airport is a 45-minute drive, with Brown County Airport 12 miles away. Amtrak passes through the area with a stop nearby in Maysville.
Hospitals
The Brooksville Fire Department provides fire and EMS service. Residents have their choice of crossing the Ohio River to reach Brown County Hospital 24 miles away in Georgetown, Ohio or heading 19 miles downriver to Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville, Kentucky.
Shopping
Daily needs like groceries and gas can be found here, but a more involved shopping trip will need a hop in the car to Augusta or Falmouth.
Recreation
If you like wide open spaces with plenty of room and time to pursue your hobbies, this is your area. Just a short drive away the Ohio River offers boating and fishing access. For residents interested in agritourism, The Lavender Hills Farm offers summer tours. The Bracken County Historical Society offers genealogy and historic research.
