About Highland Heights

Introduction

The District of Highlands was incorporated in 1867 and Highland Heights was founded in 1927. Lying just south of Fort Thomas along U.S. 27, it was predominantly a quiet, residential town until the early 1970s. Since the opening of Northern Kentucky University in 1971 as well as I-471, Highland Heights has seen a great deal of change, with new shopping areas and subdivisions and condominium communities. There are 6,900 residents.

Summary

Highland Heights prides itself on being the home of Northern Kentucky University, which is a focal point for the Northern Kentucky community and is making a significant impact on the economic and intellectual climate of the entire metropolitan area.

There are several annual events sponsored by the city: Easter egg hunt, Memorial and Veteran’s Day events, to name a few. The BB&T Arena at Northern Kentucky University hosts many events – from comedians, to sports to concerts and more. Students also enjoy the NKU rec center.
