About Glenco
Introduction
It’s not clear how the city of Glencoe got its name, but one popular tall tale is that it was named after a ‘glen of crows’ seen in the area, while others claim the town was named after its sister city in Scotland.
Summary
Glencoe is a prime example of what the Gallatin County Chamber of Commerce calls a quaint community that’s ‘little, but in the middle of it all’. Located 36 miles from Cincinnati in the rolling hills of southwestern Kentucky, the town is located at the site of a natural mill race on Eagle Creek. Glencoe was incorporated in 1876. With just 250 residents spread through the village, residents find life quiet and calm, although a busy train track that divides the town in two between the general store and the post office keeps things lively downtown.
Transportation
I71 is the main transportation hub of this county, with U.S. 127, the primary access through Glencoe. St. Rt. 467 (Old Sparta Road) connects Glencoe with nearby Sparta.
Hospitals
St Elizabeth Medical Center’s Grant County Hospital is 16 miles away in Williamstown, and Carroll County Hospital is 20 miles away in nearby Carrollton.
Shopping
The Glencoe General Store serves as the place to go to gather supplies and have a quick gossip as well. Bigger trips will need a jump in the car to either Cincinnati or Louisville.
Recreation
Most residents enjoy the great outdoors either boating on the Ohio River or enjoying a day at nearby General Butler State Park. Motor sports enthusiasts of course attend events at the nearby Kentucky Speedway. The Belterra Golf Course and Casino are just across the Ohio River in Switzerland County.
