About Yellow Springs


Discovered around 1800, Yellow Springs became a major Midwestern attraction for those seeking its 'curative' waters. For over 100 years the town was a popular health resort serving travelers on the stagecoach road nearby.


While the spring which gives the town its name still exists, this small Greene County city approximately 40 miles east of downtown Dayton is known today for its recreational attractions, wonderful shops and restaurants, and culturally diverse Antioch College where a wide range of political and social views are well represented. 4,000 residents live in charming turn of the century homes, converted farmhouses, and modest bungalows. For an escape from hectic urban life, look to Yellow Springs for a change in lifestyle.


Yellow Springs is located on St. Rt. 68. Dayton International Airport is 30 minutes away.


Although there are no hospitals in Yellow Springs, Greene Memorial Hospital is located a short distance away in Xenia. Yellow Springs does, however, inclide both traditional and holistic doctors' offices.


Shoppers will enjoy the eclectic shops clustered downtown. Not a chain store is in sight, but you will find a range of choices including gifts, spices, health foods, herbs, handcrafted arts and numerous other shops. For more everyday shopping, Fairfield Commons Mall is a short drive.


Recreational facilities are an integral part of Yellow Springs. The 72-mile Little Miami Scenic Trail Bike Path starts just north of Yellow Springs. The Glen Helen Nature Preserve offers 1000 acres of waterfalls, limestone cliffs, woods and the famous Yellow Spring. The John Bryant State Park is located minutes outside the city, along the Little Miami River. Its more than 700 acres are used by residents for camping, picnics and hiking. Close-by is Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve where hikers climb through ancient rock formations. Craft fairs, street festivals and other community events abound in Yellow Springs. The town has a seasonal community swimming pool, a chamber music series, several art galleries and an art-film theatre. A working dairy farm and frequent tourist destination, Young's Dairy Farm not only has milk straight from the cow, but a petting zoo, miniature golf and full deli and ice cream shop.
