Xenia got its name from the Greek word for hospitality.
With a population over 25,000, Xenia is located approximately 30 minutes east of downtown Dayton. Xenia is a friendly town, and known for its hospitality. It's a tenacious community finding strength in adversity. A tornado April 3, 1974 killed 33, destroyed almost half of the city's buildings and made 10,000 homeless. Nine schools, nine churches and 180 businesses perished but the city still had the courage to bounce back and make Xenia what it is today. Xenia, Ohio is centrally located in the "transportation triangle" formed by three major interstate highways I-70, I-71, and I-75. These north-south, east-west arteries are within minutes of Xenia via U.S. 35, U.S. 42, and U.S. 68, tying the community to one of the nation's largest 90-minute highway markets.
The Greene County Memorial Hospital is located in Xenia. Greene County Memorial is a 210 bed general, not for profit hospital.
Strip malls, fast food restaurants and new shops are springing up all over the city. Located ten minutes away from Xenia, the Mall at Fairfield Commons contains five department stores and 130 franchise clothing, shoe and specialty stores. Local merchants provide general merchandise and services conveniently located for residents.
Xenia is well known for its summer performances of the outdoor drama Blue Jacket. Blue Jacket is the story of the Shawnee Indians' struggle for peace in 18th century Ohio. Shawnee Park is the site of concerts, picnics, festivals, quiet walks, even fishing. For golf enthusiasts, there are two public courses in Xenia, Sebastian Hills Golf Club and WGC Golf Course. Sugar Valley Country Club is also located in Xenia. Popular biking and hiking trails through Xenia include the recently completed 10-mile portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail between Xenia and Yellow Springs. The Little Miami Scenic Trail takes you by the Spring Valley wildlife area, one of the best bird watching spots in Ohio. Xenia was named "Trail Town USA" by the American Hiking Association.
