The beauty of the countryside, the natural river setting, and one of the richest school districts in southwestern Ohio have turned this old river town into one of Cincinnati’s newest suburban attractions. Richmond was founded in 1814 along the banks of the Ohio River. Steamboats were manufactured in New Richmond and the village was a vibrant place of shipping commerce. The area blossomed with woolen mills, saw mills and graining mills along with factories and distilleries. New Richmond also become known for its Underground Railroad activities in the 1830s.
Development has been carefully planned to maintain the community's rich, rural flavor. However, the area is growing so rapidly that homes of progressive styles and designs can be found just about everywhere.
