Walnut Hills was established in 1804 by Reverend James Kemper. One of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, this eastside community is a story of redevelopment. Wherever you turn in Walnut Hills, exciting changes are taking place.
The historic Harriet Beecher Stowe House is located in Walnut Hills and the neighborhood played an important part in the Underground Railroad with Ms. Stowe’s involvement. The Walnut Hills Library is Cincinnati’s first Carnegie Library and was designed by Samuel Hannaford. History continues in Walnut Hills with several local organizations their home there. The African-American Chamber of Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky, Easter Seals and United Way are located in the neighborhood.
Other Cincinnati area hospitals, such as The Christ Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center are located within a 10-minute drive. Many uptown groups of doctor’s offices are also within easy access. One of the most advanced medical facilities in the country for research is located within the University Hospital complex, located in nearby Avondale.
Local shopping is available along Madison Road from Walnut Hills through to Oakley. Hyde Park Square, only minutes away, features excellent specialty shops, restaurants and banks. Hyde Park Plaza and Rookwood Commons and Pavilion are nearby to serve all convenience needs. A short trip north on I-71 to Kenwood and there is more shopping available at the Kenwood Towne Centre (with Nordstrom, Macy's and Dilliards as anchors) and Sycamore Square with several well-known brand stores.
Green Man Park is a green space located on East McMillan Street. Speaking of green – Walnut Hills’ residents definitely have a green thumb – the community has at least six community gardens.
Myron Bush Recreation Center, Williams Branch of YMCA and Melrose YMCA offer a variety of activities. There are numerous clubs and organizations in Walnut Hills including the Cincinnati Tennis Club (private), Walnut Hills Area Council and the Walnut Hills Business Men’s Association to name a few.
