About Port William


Port William is the northernmost city in Clinton County; just under 300 call the tiny village home.


History is important in Port William, just as in many small villages and towns across America. The Port William Union Civil War Soldier Memorial tucked into a corner downtown, honors Gilbert VanZandt of Port William. He was 10 years old when he went to war as a drummer with his father during the Civil War. “Little Gib” eventually ended up with General Sherman on his march to the sea at the end of the Civil War. Today, a painted mural commemorating that event graces an old mill just outside of town. You can often see hawks lazing over one of the many small farms that call Port William home.


Just shy of the Fayette County line, Port William is just off I71; Ohio Rt. 134 is the main way in and out of town. Nearby commuter airports include Hollister Field in Wilmington, and Bloom Field in Jamestown; Greater Cincinnati International Airport is about 75 minutes away.


Port William Fire Department serves the villages fire and EMS needs. Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington provides emergency, obstetrics, and both inpatient and outpatient care.


You’ll need to take a drive to meet your shopping needs; you can head either to Xenia, Jamestown of Wilmington to get your errands done.


Architectural buffs will enjoy the Port William Road pony truss bridge over Anderson Fork on Port William Road. Genealogists, including those researching Quaker heritage, will find the nearby cemeteries useful to update genealogic files. Most residents, though, find Caesar Creek State Park the major focus of recreation in the area, with its boating, hiking, camping and fishing the lure for many.
