About North Bend
On May 5, 1865, the first U.S. train robbery took place in North Bend. About a dozen men tore up tracks to derail an Ohio & Mississippi train from Cincinnati. More than 100 passengers were robbed at gunpoint of cash and jewelry. The robbers then blew open safes of the Adams Express Co. that were said to contain thousands of dollars in U.S. bonds. The robbers fled across the Ohio River into Kentucky and were never caught.
North Bend might be a tiny village in the extreme southwestern corner of Hamilton County with a total population of 600, but it’s a village large with history. The village is the home of William Henry Harrison- the 9th U.S. President; the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison-the 23rd President; and the cradle of local Three River’s history. North Bend, along with Quincy, MA are the only two communities in America that can claim two presidents. Harrison's tomb and monument overlooks the village. From the obelisk at the site visitors have a spectacular panorama of the Ohio River valley.
North Bend gets its name from the Ohio River, being the most northerly bend between the Muskingdom and Mississippi Rivers. New home construction and turn of the century homes sit clustered side by side with spectacular river views.
Located 15 wiles west of Cincinnati on U.S. Rt. 50 and six miles east of the Indiana state line, North Bend is most accessible by U.S. Route 50, known locally as River Road or Three Rivers Parkway. This section of Rt. 50 is part of the Ohio River Scenic Byway. Greater Cincinnati International Airport is across the Ohio River 10 miles, easily accessible by the Anderson Ferry. The Cincinnati West Airport in Harrison 9 miles away offers small plane access.
Miami Township Fire and EMS protects the village. Two hospitals are close by: Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Western Hills about 11 miles away.
You will find daily necessities in North Bend, but more in-depth shopping can be found in nearby Harrison, or heading north into Colerain Township’s Northgate Mall.
The American Discovery Trail "Southern Route" passes through North Bend and Harrison's Tomb. Covering 6800 miles through 15 states, the trail is the only coast-to-coast nomotorized recreational trail popular with cross-country hikers. There are more than 6,500 acres of parks within 20 miles of North Bend that offer fishing, horseback riding, hiking, golfing, and other seasonal outdoor activities. Boating and fishing are active pursuits because of the three nearby rivers. Motor sports fans head to nearby Cleves for yearlong activities.
