About Norwood

Introduction

Covering three-square miles, the City of Norwood is located in the heart of Cincinnati and is the second most-populous city in the county with 19,000 residents. In 1809 Samuel Bowman settled in Norwood and the railroad laid its tracks in 1866. In 1869 an 81-acre subdivision called Norwood Heights was platted and the community grew to 423 people. Once passenger trains were established, Norwood (a shortened word for Northwood) grew and in 1888 it became a village with a population of 1000. By 1896 that population grew to 7,000 people. In 1903 the village became a city when residents rejected becoming part of Cincinnati.

The Bethesda Family Clinic is located in Norwood. Citizens benefit from living close to many area hospitals. Rookwood Medical Center Mercy Health is located along I-71 and is a state-of-the-art facility with an emergency department as well as primary care offices. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital at Norwood provides post-acute care.

Jewish Hospital Kenwood Mercy Health is located in Sycamore Township and is only a 10-minute drive. This hospital features a state-of-the-art patient tower as well as a 24-hour emergency department. It is the region’s only adult Blood & Marrow Transplant Center. Bethesda North Hospital, a Level III Trauma Center, is located in Montgomery and is a 15-minute drive away.

Other Cincinnati area hospitals, such as The Christ Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center are located within a 15-minute drive. Many uptown groups of doctor’s offices are also within easy access. One of the most advanced medical facilities in the country for research is located within the (Cincinnati) University Hospital complex, located in nearby Avondale.

Shopping

An area of approximately three square miles, Norwood is host to three large shopping centers and only minutes from others. Surrey Square Mall and Central Park Mall are located in the heart of downtown Norwood. Rookwood Pavilion and Rookwood Commons are located on the outskirts of Norwood. Shopping includes supermarkets, clothing, discount, hardware, car dealerships, books, furniture and more. Nearby Hyde Park and Kenwood offer even more shopping and dining opportunities.

Recreation

Recreational opportunities abound for Norwood’s residents. The city’s parks system maintains nine neighborhood parks featuring ball fields, swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts and picnic areas. Norwood’s Recreation Commission, Community Center and YMCA offer a wide range of facilities, equipment and programs. The community hosts an annual Fourth of July parade.
