About Symmes Township
Attractive estates, homes, townhouses, condominiums and growing retail and commercial areas now grace the hills of Symmes Township where wildlife once roamed the sycamore woods; where farmers worked the fertile soil near the Little Miami River; where industrious Germans founded mill villages.
It's quite a change since the first pioneers came to this area in the 1790s, but a link remains between the first settlers and today's suburban dweller - an appreciation for open spaces, privacy and a less hectic life. Symmes Township bears the name of John Cleves Symmes whose purchase of the lands between the two Miami rivers (the Miami Purchase) in 1788 led to the founding of Cincinnati. The township itself was founded in 1824. Early residents were German and Scotch-Irish. Interstates I-71 and I-275 have opened up Symmes to increasing development. Homes are beautiful examples of today's architectural brilliance, gathered together in warm, friendly communities. And while industry and commercialism have ensured Symmes Township's growing prosperity and contemporary services, a sense of history still lives in some older buildings, villages and even in life-long residents.
Easy access to I-71, I-275 and I-75 takes Symmes residents to downtown Cincinnati and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is within 30 minutes.
"Bethesda North Hospital" – a Level One Trauma Center – is located south in Montomgery, with well-used emergency room facilities. "Jewish Hospital Kenwood" is within a ten-minute drive and is located on Kenwood Road in Sycamore Township. This hospital features a state-of-the-art patient tower as well as a 24-hour emergency department. It also offers the region’s only adult Blood & Marrow Transplant Center.
Other Cincinnati area hospitals, such as The Christ Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, University Hospital and the Children’s Hospital Medical Center are located within a 20-minute drive.
The largest retail shopping centers are Harper's Point and Governor's Plaza II. Harper's Station and the Fields Ertel corridor offer many exciting retail choices. Specialty shops, boutiques and large supermarkets also serve the area. The Kenwood Towne Centre is located within a 10-minute drive and features 180 specialty stores as well as Nordstrom's, Macy's and Dilliard's department stores. Also nearby is The Kenwood Collection and Sycamore Plaza which feature national brand retail stores.
"Symmes Township Park" has 3 picnic shelters, playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts, walking trails, a bark park and bird sanctuary. The "Camp Dennison Nature Trail" has a half-mile hiking trail that is quite scenic. Beautiful "Seven Gables Park" covers over 8 acres at the intersection of Seven Gables and Montgomery Road and has a picnic are, playground and walking trail. "Home of the Brave Park" has 54 acres with soccer, and softball fields, a Veteran's memorial area as well as wet and dry playground areas. "Stonebridge Park" features a ball field and playground. "Blong Memorial Park" is a small park that memorializes those citizens killed by the April 1999 tornado. "Meade Park" is located on Lebanon Road and is highlighted by the 1900s Greek-Revival House that is used by the Cincinnati Horticultural Society. You will also find a reconstructed log house in this park along with walking trails. "The Little Miami Bike Trail" runs through the township and offers a great place to ride, run or walk. "Kings Island Amusement Park" is nearby, as are The Beach Waterpark, golf courses, swimming clubs and much more.
The Symmes Regional Branch Library is the largest branch in the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library System.
