About Indian Hill
The single most-compelling quality of the nearly 20 square miles known as Indian Hill is its village atmosphere. With a population of around 5,900 people, it’s technically a city but its lifestyle over the years has remained constant, that of a residential community which preserves the country atmosphere and the gifts nature has bestowed upon it. Indian Hill’s history begins with the Indian Tribes of the Shawnee, Miami and Delaware who came to the area to hunt and fish. In 1787, Benjamin Stites (veteran of the Revolutionary War) visited the area and then persuaded John Symmes to purchase a million acres. Symmes sold Stites 10,000 acres adjacent to the Ohio and Little Miami Rivers for $.66 an acre. As years past settles came and the area evolved into a farming community and later into a rural weekend destination. In the 1920s, the Camargo Realty Company divided lots into 25-acre plots as a district of grand home estates. Today, Indian Hill is zoned single-family residential or agriculture.
The village is governed by an elected council and professional manager. Indian Hill has its own water supply, and exceptional police and fire protection. Its recreational facilities are varied and well patronized. The community has its own service department for waste disposal and road maintenance. Indian Hill supports the boy scouts, girl scouts, and numerous cultural and garden clubs. The village has always had a green thumb, and an affinity for open space. This is manifested in the Green Areas program, which through purchase and gifts, has created an almost unbroken arc of greenery around and throughout the village. As a place to live, Indian Hill offers the most in privacy, and boundless natural beauty.
Indian Hill is about 20 to 25 minutes driving time to downtown Cincinnati. Expressways I-71, I-75 and I-275 are not far with easy access to Ronald Reagan Highway. Public bus service terminates at the village limits.
It is about a 10-minute drive to Jewish Hospital - Mercy Health in Kenwood. Bethesda North Hospital is in nearby Montgomery. Other area hospitals, including Children’s Hospital Medical Center, The Christ Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and University are approximately 25-minutes away.
Kenwood Towne Centre, offering 1,000,000 square feet of shopping pleasure, is only 5 minutes away. This mall is occupied by 100+ specialty stores, three large department stores, including Nordstrom, Macy’s and Dillards, and various restaurants, making this one of the larger shopping facilities in the state of Ohio. Also located in Kenwood is The Kenwood Collection with stores including LL Bean, The Container Store and Crate & Barrel. Sycamore Plaza features several national brand stores and a few restaurants. Madeira is located just outside of the village and has several local shops, restaurants and banks along Miami Road.
Property known as the Village Green serves as a playground with four tennis courts, a basketball court and shelter house. A fishing lake behind the tennis courts is stocked periodically and, in winter, is used for ice skating. Three baseball diamonds support 300 kids in knothole baseball. There is a beautiful membership swimming club. The Camargo Country Club is private. The Indian Hill Winter Club offers its members an ice skating rink to enjoy, along with hockey leagues, social curling opportunities, paddle leagues as well as spinning bikes and classes.
Seven garden clubs help beautify the community. The village maintains over 75 miles of bridle paths. Rowe Arboretum has a lovely collection of trees and shrubs to enjoy. There are 10 parks in the village offering walking paths, soccer fields, play areas, baseball diamonds an picnic areas.
The Indian Hill Shooting Club has two skeet fields, a trap field and sporting clays.
