About North College Hill

Introduction

LaBoyteaux-Cary Cemetery, the resting site of pioneers including the Cary family, is North College Hill’s oldest landmark on the northwest corner of Galbraith Road and Hamilton Avenue. William Cary settled in the area in 1813 along what is now Hamilton Avenue. He built a cabin in this wilderness that was known as Mill Creek Township. The area later became a weathly suburb called Pleasant Hill and was renamed College Hill due to quite a few schools that were established there in the mid 1800s. Cary built a white, brick house called Cary Cottage which became the first home for blind women in Ohio. This home was later purchased by William Procter (grandson of the Procter & Gamble founders) and the Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired was established. Also of note is the fact the Dr. Isaac Mayer Wise (known as a leader in Reform Judaism in America) had a 40-acre farm near the current intersection of Goodman and Hamilton Avenues. College Hill was largely farmland throughout the 1800s. In 1905, a subdivision of small homes were constructed near Galbraith Road and Hamilton Avenue called Meyerville. More subdivisions were established and the area grew. There were 4,100 residents in the 1920s and 12,000 residents by the early 1960s. The City of North College Hill currently has 9,300 residents.

Transportation

North College Hill has very good bus service to Downtown Cincinnati and two main arteries of Cincinnati from the city’s main streets, thus giving good access roads to town and to eastern suburbs. The Ronald Reagan Highway gives easy access to I-75, I-74, I-275 and I-71. Driving time to downtown is 30 minutes

Hospitals

Mercy Health - Mt. Airy is less than a mile from the center of North College Hill. The Cincinnati Residential Treatment Center for Children is located on Hamilton Avenue. Cincinnati’s Good Samaritan Hospital is about 15 minutes away, with several others five minutes further.

Shopping

There are many retail outlets along Galbraith Road and Hamilton Avenue. A convenience center is at the intersection of these streets. The large Tri-County Mall with three department stores is about 15 minutes away. The Northgate Mall, at Springdale and Colerain, is only 10 minutes from North College Hill.

Recreation

Nearby Clovernook Country Club is a private 18-hole course. There is also a public 18-hole course 12 minutes away in Winton Woods. A community swimming pool and playground is at the disposal of North College Hill residents and guests. There are many baseball diamonds available and a four-week basketball clinic is held for boys prior to the season. Within a mile or two are boating and fishing lakes. There is a dancing class for children from age 5 and a program in ballroom dancing for boys and girls of junior high age. A tennis club with indoor courts, lockers and gym is also available. North College Hill has six parks: Dumley Park, Pies and North Creek Park, Schafper Park, Stapleton Park and Veterans Park.
