Introduction
Greater Dayton Area Overview
Summary
Wrapped along the Great Miami River, the Greater Dayton area prides itself on big city amenities coupled with Midwestern charm and hospitality. The many towns and villages that dot the Miami Valley lie in the shadow of downtown Dayton’s distinction as the ‘Birthplace of Aviation’. With the Aviation Heritage National Historic Park, the National Air Force Museum, and the trails of Wilbur and Orville Wright it’s a richly cultured area, making this a great place to live and work. Outside the city, there are still plenty of wide-open spaces in the Greater Dayton area to call home as the easily accessible suburban areas continue to build on the area’s reputation for unique attractions, pleasant living and exceptional natural beauty.
Transportation
Two of America’s most traveled highways, I-75 and I-70 meet in Montgomery County, making it easy to get just about anywhere you want to go; Rt. 35 also crosses through the region. RTA provides bus service to Dayton and surrounding areas. Dayton’s RTA is one of only five cities in the U.S. with electric trolleys offering an environmentally responsible form of mass transit. The Greyhound Bus station services many nearby midwestern cities. Biking enthusiasts will love the Great Miami River Recreation Trail.
Hospitals
Several hospitals serve the area including Grandview, Southview, Children’s Hospital and the Miami Valley Regional Hospital.
Shopping
You can find it all in downtown Dayton-including department and specialty stores with many just a quick walking trip away. The Wegerzyn River Market at the historic Cannery Warehouse is worth a special trip. Many household needs can be met within minutes of home at several neighborhood shopping centers.
Recreation
The area is as alive with activity as you want, or offers a slower pace if you’re looking for some solitude. Arts and culture attractions, theatre, pro sports, and numerous colleges call this area home. You’re probably no more than 15 minutes away from any of the Five Rivers MetroParks with 20 facilities covering 11,000 acres for year-round recreation. Each of the nearby cities host annual events including Stagecoach Days, Heritage Festival, the internationally acclaimed Dayton Air Show, Ice Cream Festival, and Old Fashioned Days.
